Vincent van Gogh painted Sunflowers in two series — one in Paris in 1887, one in Arles in 1888. This version is from the Arles series, where he produced five large canvases to decorate Paul Gauguin's room before his arrival. Van Gogh used the sunflower as his personal symbol; he signed letters to Gauguin with a sunflower. Four versions of the Arles series survive: in the National Gallery London, the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam, the Neue Pinakothek Munich, and a private collection in Japan.
