The gold ground in an icon is not a background. It is a non-space, meant to read as something other than the physical world, which is why gold-ground work behaves differently on a wall to anything else: it needs warmth around it. Wood, brass, leather and warm or dark walls all work, while cold grey turns the gold brassy.
Painting sacred subjects onto everyday objects is a very old practice rather than a modern provocation — Portuguese azulejo tiles put devotional scenes on building façades for centuries. Read the full sacred art guide.
