Michelangelo David Sculpture – Renaissance Icon Skateboard Wall Art
Michelangelo carved David between 1501 and 1504 from a single block of Carrara marble 5.17 metres tall. The block had been quarried forty years earlier and left abandoned — two sculptors had already tried and given up on it. Michelangelo was 26 when he took on the commission. Unlike earlier Davids by Donatello and Verrocchio which show David after defeating Goliath, Michelangelo shows David before: tense, alert, about to act. The statue stood in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence until 1873; it is now at the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence.
