Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres painted Napoleon I on His Imperial Throne in 1806, one year after Napoleon's coronation. Napoleon sits frontally, immobile, loaded with imperial symbols — the sceptre of Charlemagne, the hand of justice, the eagle. Ingres modelled the composition on medieval portraits of the enthroned Christ. Napoleon himself reportedly disliked the painting. The original is at the Musée de l'Armée in Paris.
