Annibale Carracci painted The Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne on the ceiling of the Farnese Gallery in Rome between 1597 and 1608. Cardinal Odoardo Farnese commissioned the fresco cycle — one of the most important in Rome after the Sistine Chapel. Carracci took the Ovidian mythology of the gods and painted it with the physical solidity of ancient Roman sculpture. Bacchus rides a chariot led by tigers through a procession of satyrs, maenads, and sea creatures. The Farnese Gallery is still in Rome and open to visitors.
