Caravaggio Saint John the Baptist Skateboard Art
Caravaggio painted at least two versions of Saint John the Baptist -- the most famous around 1601-1602, now at the Musei Capitolini in Rome. John the Baptist was the forerunner of Christ, who lived in the wilderness, wore camel skins, and baptised believers in the Jordan River. Caravaggio painted him young and ambiguous, the wilderness reduced to a dark background, the figure lit by a single raking light source. The painting was owned by Cardinal Francesco Maria Del Monte before entering the Capitoline collections. Caravaggio's technique of painting directly onto canvas without preliminary sketches -- working from life, often using models from the street -- was revolutionary.
