LUCA is a Seoul-based artist who visualises latent emotions and inner energy through intricately intertwined black-and-white forms. Valuing intensity within stillness, LUCA believes that every drawing carries a flame of its own.
LUCA works exclusively in black and white — picked up a black pen instead of a pencil at eleven years old, in a world that was already full of colour, and decided to interpret it in ink alone. The result is drawing built from density and contrast rather than colour: intricately intertwined forms, wings, eyes, and architecture layered so tightly that a single piece can take on the scale and weight of a full composition without a single colour to lean on.
The Interview
To start, tell us a little about yourself. How did you get into art?
Hello, I'm LUCA, an illustrator based in South Korea. I began drawing in elementary school, copying illustrations from children's books and images I found online. I enjoyed drawing far more than running around and playing with my friends, so I would spend entire days doing it. Eventually, drawing became a habit — and now it feels like a natural part of my everyday life.
Your work has a very distinctive visual style. How did you develop it, and how would you describe it yourself?
When I began drawing more seriously at around the age of eleven, I picked up a pen rather than a pencil — a black pen. The world was already full of colour, and I wanted to interpret it using only black and white. At the centre of my style, I always place an intense flame — something that immediately draws the eye. Even without colour, I value the depth that can be created through density and contrast.
Where do you usually find ideas and inspiration for new work?
My ideas mainly come from emotions and imagination. Abstract images begin to appear in my mind as I try to give form to things that do not have a physical shape.
How does a new piece usually begin for you? Do you already see the final composition in your head, or does it develop during the process?
It is rare for me to have the final composition perfectly formed in my mind from the beginning. I usually start with only a rough idea of the overall shape, and the piece changes intuitively as I work on it.
Why do you work so often in black and white? What does this aesthetic give to your work?
Working in black and white is a powerful way to convey stillness and intensity at the same time. I think it allows me to express the many hidden meanings within my work — both microscopic and expansive — in a way that feels quiet yet forceful. With the level of detail already present in my drawings, using too many colours could easily make them feel visually overwhelming.
You live and work in Seoul. How much does the city and Korean visual culture influence your art?
Seoul is one of the world's most densely populated metropolitan cities, and its complexity has a lot in common with my drawings. The movement of a large city, like the countless interwoven lines in my work, can feel chaotic and intense. One day, while standing on the rooftop of a thirty-story building, I looked across the dense clusters of buildings and apartment towers. Between them, I noticed mountains and patches of greenery scattered throughout the city. They felt like spaces of rest — moments of emptiness within the constantly moving city. It made me realise that my drawings also needed that kind of negative space. I began to recognise the importance of balance. I have also always been interested in traditional patterns and visual styles from around the world, and recently I have become especially interested in researching Korean traditional patterns and aesthetics.
On Skateboard Decks
When you look at a skateboard deck, do you see it mainly as a skateboard or as a canvas for art?
In the neighbourhood where I live, I rarely see skateboards featuring detailed artwork. Most are simply black or decorated with very minimal patterns. Even the skateboard at my own home is completely black. Whenever I looked at it, it felt too plain, and I wanted to draw something on it. As an object associated with youth and street culture, I felt that it deserved to carry something visually powerful. To me, every empty surface can become a canvas for art.
If you were creating a piece specifically for a skateboard deck, what would be most important to you in terms of composition and shape?
This is a question that genuinely excites me. The most important thing would be creating a natural relationship between the shape of the deck and my artwork. I would want to use its long, narrow proportions and curves as part of the composition itself. My work often features vertically flowing structures and symmetrical forms, so I would like to develop a composition that emphasises those continuous details and fits naturally within the deck's shape. Ideally, it would appear as one powerful silhouette from a distance while revealing intricate details when viewed up close.
Influences and What's Next
Are there any artists, designers, musicians, or other creatives who have strongly influenced you or continue to inspire you today?
One person who has inspired me since my school years is G-Dragon of the K-pop group BIGBANG. Through his music, fashion, and ongoing involvement in art, I think he truly embodies what it means to be an artist. His pioneering spirit and willingness to explore different creative fields rather than remaining within a single genre continue to influence me.
What kind of project, collaboration, or creative direction would you most like to explore in the future?
In the future, I would especially like to explore fashion projects and collaborations that allow my artwork to become part of clothing. I am currently researching how to create an independent brand that extends the visual language of my drawings into garments and other objects. At the same time, I do not want to limit myself to fashion. I would be open to collaborating across skateboarding, music, spaces, objects, or any other field where my work can form a natural and meaningful connection.

Interview summary
- LUCA is a Seoul-based illustrator who has worked exclusively in black-and-white ink since age eleven, choosing a pen over a pencil to interpret an already-colourful world without colour.
- Her compositions rarely start fully formed — a rough shape develops intuitively as she works, built from density and contrast rather than colour.
- Seoul's density directly shaped her sense of negative space: the city's mountains and green patches between apartment towers taught her that her drawings needed room to rest too.
- She'd approach a skateboard deck by building around its long, narrow, curved proportions directly — one powerful silhouette from a distance, intricate detail up close.
- G-Dragon of BIGBANG has influenced her since school for his willingness to work across multiple creative fields rather than staying in one genre — something she'd like to do herself, especially in fashion.
- Her designs aren't in the deckarts catalogue yet; this interview introduces her work ahead of that.
