William-Adolphe Bouguereau painted his Pietà in 1876. The subject is the Virgin Mary holding the body of Christ after the Crucifixion — one of the oldest scenes in Christian art, painted by Michelangelo in marble and by dozens of masters in oil. Bouguereau's version is notable for its academic precision: the anatomy is flawless, the grief physical and immediate. Bouguereau was the most celebrated French academic painter of his era, and was bitterly opposed to Impressionism — which eventually eclipsed his reputation. The painting is in a private collection.
