Kuniyoshi Kabuki Actors Skateboard Art – Diptych
Utagawa Kuniyoshi designed woodblock prints of Kabuki actors throughout the 1820s-1850s, during the height of the ukiyo-e print tradition in Edo (now Tokyo). Kabuki actor prints (yakusha-e) were the most commercially popular genre in Japanese printmaking — actors were celebrities, and their portraits sold in large editions to fans. Kuniyoshi was known for dramatic compositions and his actors often appear in dynamic poses mid-performance.
