Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted The Tower of Babel in 1563. The construction tower, modelled closely on the Colosseum in Rome, fills the entire composition — workers swarm every level while the king watches from below. Bruegel painted two versions; this larger one is at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The painting is read as a warning against human ambition and the chaos that follows.
