Raphael painted The School of Athens between 1509 and 1511 in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace — one of four frescoes in the Stanza della Segnatura, commissioned by Pope Julius II. The painting depicts the great philosophers of antiquity gathered in an idealized Greek building: Plato (with Leonardo's face) and Aristotle at the centre, Socrates arguing on the left, Pythagoras calculating in the foreground, and Diogenes sprawled on the steps. Raphael painted himself into the lower right corner. Michelangelo — working on the Sistine Chapel ceiling just down the hall — appears as Heraclitus, leaning alone on a marble block.
