Leda and the Swan Renaissance Skateboard Diptych
Leda and the Swan is one of the most frequently painted mythological subjects in Western art — from Leonardo da Vinci (whose version is lost) to Michelangelo (ditto) to Tintoretto, Rubens, and Veronese. The story from Ovid's Metamorphoses describes Zeus transforming himself into a swan to seduce Leda. This version follows the Renaissance compositional tradition: Leda reclining, the swan's neck curved around her. It was a subject that pushed against the limits of what was acceptable to paint.
