Velázquez Coronation of the Virgin Skateboard Art
Diego Velazquez painted The Coronation of the Virgin around 1641-1644 for the oratory of Queen Isabella of Bourbon in the Royal Alcazar of Madrid. The subject -- the Virgin Mary being crowned Queen of Heaven by the Trinity -- was a common devotional theme in Spanish Baroque art. Velazquez painted it with the same directness he brought to royal portraits: no excess sentiment, the figures solid and present. The painting is at the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
