Quick answer
How to hang skateboard deck wall art: two D-rings on the deck's back, approximately 44 cm apart. Mark two wall anchors at the same height. Drill, insert rawlplugs, drive screws. Art centre at 155–165 cm from the floor (standard). Use a spirit level. For above a bed: add a secondary safety wire. DeckArts from ~$140.
Hanging a DeckArts skateboard deck wall art requires two wall anchors, a spirit level, a pencil, a measuring tape, and approximately 20–30 minutes. This guide covers every wall type, room-specific height formulas, triptych alignment, above-bed safety, and Command strip alternatives for rental apartments. DeckArts from ~$140. Ships from Berlin.
D-Rings, Spacing, Weight
Every DeckArts deck has two metal D-ring hanging hardware pieces screwed into the back of the deck. The D-rings accept standard picture hooks, screw heads, Command strips, or hanging wire.
D-ring centre-to-centre spacing: approximately 44 cm on a standard single deck (85 cm tall). This is the critical measurement: the two wall anchors must be at exactly this spacing.
Weight per deck: approximately 0.8–1.2 kg. A triptych (3 decks): approximately 2.4–3.6 kg. Anchors rated 5 kg per anchor provide a 4–6× safety margin for a single deck; two anchors at 5 kg each = 10 kg total = 8–12× safety margin for a 0.8–1.2 kg deck.
Wall Types: Plaster, Plasterboard, Tile, Brick
Solid plaster over brick or concrete (most European domestic walls): Standard M5 or M6 rawlplug + screw rated 5+ kg. Drill 6 mm pilot hole with masonry drill bit; insert rawlplug; drive screw leaving 5–8 mm of screw head proud of the wall surface for the D-ring.
Plasterboard / drywall: Do NOT use standard rawlplugs (no holding power without a stud). Use specific plasterboard anchors: Molly bolts, toggle bolts, or specialist hollow-wall anchors rated 5+ kg each. Or locate the timber stud with a stud finder and drive a screw directly into the stud.
Tile (kitchen, bathroom): Use a diamond-tip tile drill bit. Drill at low speed with water cooling. Insert a tile-rated rawlplug; drive the screw. Alternatively, install above the tile on the tile-free wall section.
Solid brick or concrete: Masonry drill bit (percussion mode). 6 mm hole. Standard M5 rawlplug + screw. Most reliable wall type for hanging art.

Step-by-Step: Single Deck
- Mark the art centre point on the wall with a pencil at the intended height (e.g. 160 cm from floor).
- Calculate the D-ring hanging height: Deck is 85 cm tall. Measure the distance from the deck's top edge to the D-ring on the back of the actual deck (approximately 10–15 cm). D-ring hanging height = centre height − (deck height ÷ 2) + D-ring distance from top. Example: 160 − 42.5 + 12 = 129.5 cm from the floor.
- Mark both anchor positions: From the D-ring height mark, measure 22 cm left and 22 cm right (44 cm total D-ring spacing). Mark both points. Use a spirit level to confirm both marks are at exactly the same height.
- Drill anchor holes: Drill at each mark using the appropriate bit for the wall type. Insert rawlplug or specialist anchor.
- Drive the screws, leaving 5–8 mm of screw head proud of the wall.
- Hang the deck: Place both D-rings on the two screw heads. Check level. Adjust screw depth if needed.
Tools: Measuring tape, pencil, spirit level (or spirit level app), drill, appropriate drill bit, screwdriver, M5 or M6 rawlplugs and screws.
Installing a Triptych: Spacing and Alignment
A triptych is three individual decks displayed together as a unified composition. The standard spacing between deck edges is 2–3 cm. At this spacing, the three decks read as a single unified composition with minimal visible gap.
Total triptych width: 3 × 20 cm (deck width) + 2 × 2–3 cm (gaps) = approximately 66–67 cm.
Alignment is critical: All six D-ring anchor points must be at exactly the same height. An error of 5 mm between deck heights is clearly visible in the finished installation. Use a chalk line or laser level for precise horizontal reference before marking any anchor positions.
Installation sequence: Hang the centre deck first. Then hang the left deck, checking horizontal alignment with the centre using a spirit level. Then hang the right deck.

Safety: Above Bed, Above Fireplace
Above a sleeping position: Never rely on a single anchor. Use two screw anchors in solid wall or studs (rated 5+ kg each). Add a secondary safety wire: 1 mm stainless steel wire from the deck's centre D-ring to a third anchor point installed 20–25 cm above the deck's top edge, centred. The safety wire catches the deck if either primary anchor fails. The sleeping occupant cannot respond to a falling object. See: How to Hang Art Above a Bed: Safety Guide.
Above a fireplace: Minimum 30 cm gap between the mantel shelf and the deck's bottom edge for wood-burning fireplaces; 15–20 cm for gas or electric. Check wall surface temperature during active use; do not hang if temperature at the anchor position exceeds 40°C. See: Wall Art Above a Fireplace 2026.
Command Strips: When to Use and When Not
Use Command strips when: Rental apartments (no holes permitted); smooth painted plaster or smooth drywall surfaces; lightweight single decks (0.8–1.2 kg). Use two large 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips rated 7.2 kg per pair = 6–9× safety margin. Remove by pulling the tab slowly straight downward.
Do NOT use Command strips as sole primary anchor when:
- Above a sleeping position
- On textured, porous, or freshly painted surfaces (adhesive does not bond reliably)
- In bathrooms or kitchens where sustained high humidity (70–80% RH) can degrade the adhesive bond
- For triptychs, diptychs, or 4–5 deck formats (2–6 kg total weight)
For rental apartments above a bed: use screw anchors (fill on departure) rather than Command strips — the safety requirement supersedes the no-holes preference. See: Wall Art for a Rental Apartment 2026.
FAQ
How do you hang a skateboard deck on the wall?
Two D-rings on the deck's back, approximately 44 cm apart. Mark two wall anchor points at the same height (spirit level). Drill and insert rawlplugs (appropriate to wall type). Drive screws leaving 5–8 mm proud. Hang D-rings on screw heads. Check level. Full step-by-step above. DeckArts from ~$140.
What height should wall art be hung at?
Art centre at 155–165 cm from the floor (standard primary wall). 165–175 cm above a bed. 125–145 cm facing a desk. 115–135 cm at toilet wall position. 180–190 cm above a fireplace mantel. Full height guide: Wall Art Sizing Guide. DeckArts from ~$140.
Can I use Command strips for skateboard deck wall art?
Yes for single decks (0.8–1.2 kg) on smooth painted walls: two large 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips (rated 7.2 kg per pair). Not as sole primary anchor above a sleeping position; not on textured or porous surfaces; not in sustained high-humidity environments; not for triptychs or larger formats. DeckArts from ~$140.
